This engraving depicts the biblical account of Absalom, the son of King David, caught by his hair in the branches of an oak tree during the battle in the forest of Ephraim. Johannes Wierix, a member of the prolific Wierix family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the fine lines and controlled hatching characteristic of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking. The composition follows the narrative sequence found in the Second Book of Samuel, chapter eighteen, where Joab discovers Absalom suspended and proceeds to strike him with spears.

The scene is organised with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background, typical of the period's approach to narrative illustration. In the foreground, the central figure of Absalom is positioned against the trunk of the tree, his arms raised in a gesture of helplessness. To the left, mounted soldiers approach, while the background reveals a sprawling battlefield with a distant city, providing a sense of scale to the conflict. The hand-applied colour adds a decorative quality to the print, distinguishing the figures and their armour from the surrounding foliage and terrain.

Wierix was known for his ability to produce small-scale, highly detailed works that were often collected in albums or used as illustrations for religious texts.
