This portrait depicts Maerten van Nieuwenhove, a young member of a prominent Bruges family, at the age of twenty-three. Painted by Hans Memling in 1487, the work forms the right wing of a devotional diptych. The left wing, which is not shown here, features the Virgin and Child. The composition places the donor in a domestic interior, his hands clasped in prayer, directed toward the sacred figures on the opposing panel.

Memling employs a meticulous technique, characteristic of the Early Netherlandish tradition. The artist captures the texture of the donor's velvet doublet and the subtle play of light across his features. Through the window behind the sitter, a landscape is visible, complete with a small figure of Saint George on horseback depicted in the stained glass.
