The End of the World - Luca Signorelli

A dramatic fresco from the San Brizio Chapel in Orvieto, depicting the chaotic events of the apocalypse through the lens of Renaissance humanism.

This fresco forms part of the cycle depicting the Last Judgement within the San Brizio Chapel at Orvieto Cathedral. Luca Signorelli executed this work between 1499 and 1502, demonstrating his mastery of human anatomy and dramatic narrative composition. The scene depicts the cataclysmic events preceding the final judgement, featuring figures in states of panic, destruction, and divine intervention.

Signorelli organises the composition around the architectural arch of the chapel entrance. The upper register contains celestial figures, while the lower sections show groups of people reacting to the unfolding apocalypse. The artist employs a muscular, sculptural approach to the human form, a characteristic trait of his style that influenced later painters of the Italian Renaissance. The palette consists of earthy tones, ochres, and muted reds, which ground the supernatural subject matter in a tangible, physical reality.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on serene religious iconography, Signorelli prioritised the psychological and physical intensity of the human experience. The figures are rendered with precise anatomical detail, showing tension in their limbs and expressions of terror or resignation. The integration of the painting with the physical architecture of the chapel creates a sense of immersion for the viewer. This work remains a primary example of the transition from the Early to the High Renaissance, where the focus shifted towards the expressive potential of the human body in motion. The fresco cycle at Orvieto is widely regarded as the culmination of Signorelli's career, showcasing his ability to manage large-scale narrative projects with clarity and vigour.
