Description
A fine etching by the Italian Mannerist master Parmigianino, depicting the Entombment of Christ with characteristic grace and elongated forms.
This etching by Parmigianino, a central figure of the Italian Mannerist movement, captures the solemnity of the Entombment of Christ. The composition is defined by the artist's characteristic elongation of the human form, a stylistic choice that moves away from the balanced proportions of the High Renaissance. The figures are arranged in a dense, emotive grouping, with the body of Christ positioned horizontally across the foreground. His form is rendered with a delicate, fluid line that suggests both physical weight and spiritual exhaustion.
To the right, a standing figure gestures towards the scene, providing a vertical contrast to the recumbent Christ. The background remains largely atmospheric, with light and shadow used to direct the viewer's gaze toward the central figures. Parmigianino employs a sophisticated hatching technique to build volume and texture, particularly in the drapery of the mourners and the musculature of the central figure. The crown of thorns lies discarded in the immediate foreground, a stark, singular detail that anchors the narrative.
As an etcher, Parmigianino was experimental, often using the medium to explore the same stylistic concerns found in his paintings and drawings. This work demonstrates his ability to translate the grace and tension of his draftsmanship into the print medium. The scene avoids rigid symmetry, opting instead for a rhythmic, almost serpentine flow of bodies that guides the eye across the frame. It is a work that rewards close inspection, revealing the technical precision behind the artist's expressive, elongated aesthetic.
