This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts the Entombment of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Northern Mannerist artists. Dolendo, a Dutch engraver active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates a high level of technical control in this work. The composition is organised around the central, lifeless figure of Christ, who is being lowered into a stone sarcophagus. The surrounding figures, including the Virgin Mary and other mourners, display a range of emotional responses, from quiet grief to physical exhaustion.

One of the most striking elements of the print is the use of light. A spherical lantern hangs from a rocky overhang, casting a distinct glow that illuminates the scene against the surrounding darkness. This artificial light source creates dramatic shadows and highlights, a technique that adds a sense of theatricality to the religious narrative.
