Description
A detailed Pre-Raphaelite scene depicting a moment from John Keats's poem, The Eve of St. Agnes, showing the escape of Madeline and Porphyro.
William Holman Hunt painted The Eve of St. Agnes in 1848, drawing direct inspiration from the narrative poem by John Keats. This work captures the moment Madeline and Porphyro escape from the castle during the revelry of the feast. Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, applied the group's principles of close observation and bright, clear colour to this literary subject.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the left, the background shows the drunken guests in the hall, illuminated by moonlight filtering through stained glass. The foreground features a servant asleep on the floor, surrounded by hounds, while the central figures of Madeline and Porphyro prepare to depart through the open door. Hunt utilised a complex lighting scheme, balancing the cool moonlight from the window with the warmer, artificial light within the interior space.
Every element, from the texture of the clothing to the architectural details of the stone archway, receives equal attention. This focus on material reality reflects the Pre-Raphaelite desire to move away from the conventions of the Royal Academy. The painting demonstrates the artist's interest in medieval themes, a common preoccupation for Victorian painters who looked to the past for romantic and moral narratives. By choosing a specific moment from Keats, Hunt invites the viewer to consider the tension between the quiet intimacy of the lovers and the chaotic environment they leave behind. The work remains a primary example of early Pre-Raphaelite technique, showing the precision and narrative clarity that defined the movement during its initial years.
