Description

A dramatic eighteenth-century etching depicting the mythological fall of Phaeton, rendered with fluid lines and atmospheric tonal qualities.

This print depicts the classical myth of Phaeton, the son of Helios, who lost control of his father's sun chariot. The composition captures the chaotic moment of descent, with the horses rearing in panic and Phaeton tumbling through the clouds. The artist, the comte de Caylus, was a prominent French antiquarian and amateur printmaker who experimented with various etching techniques during the eighteenth century.

The work displays a characteristic Rococo sensibility, prioritising movement and dramatic gesture over rigid anatomical precision. The lines are fluid and expressive, conveying the kinetic energy of the falling figure and the panicked steeds. The use of a monochromatic, greenish-grey tone adds a sense of atmospheric depth, suggesting the celestial space through which the chariot falls. The light source, emanating from the upper right, creates strong contrasts that define the musculature of the figures and the billowing forms of the clouds.

Caylus was known for his interest in the technical aspects of printmaking, often collaborating with professional engravers to reproduce works by masters such as Rubens or Parmigianino. This particular piece reflects his engagement with the dramatic themes common in the art of his period. The print serves as a record of the eighteenth-century fascination with classical narratives and the development of tonal printmaking techniques. The composition is balanced by the diagonal trajectory of the falling chariot, which draws the eye from the upper right corner down towards the lower left, creating a sense of inevitable motion. The print is a fine example of the period's interest in mythological subjects rendered with a focus on dramatic narrative and stylistic flair.
