Julian Alden Weir painted The Grey Trellis in 1891, capturing a quiet corner of his farm in Branchville, Connecticut. The composition centres on a wooden garden structure, rendered in cool, muted tones that contrast with the warmth of the surrounding foliage. Weir employs a loose, painterly technique, applying pigment in short, visible strokes that suggest the dappled light filtering through the trees.
