Description
A fine sixteenth-century Flemish engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the Holy Family and the young John the Baptist.
This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts a quiet domestic scene involving the Holy Family and the young John the Baptist. Wierix, a member of a prolific family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the use of fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The composition centres on the infant Christ, who sleeps peacefully on a cloth, while the Virgin Mary looks on with a gentle expression. To the right, the young John the Baptist gestures towards the child, referencing his future role as the herald of Christ. Saint Joseph is positioned to the left, observing the scene with a contemplative demeanour.
The work is characteristic of the late sixteenth-century Flemish tradition, where religious subjects were frequently reproduced as small-scale prints for private devotion. Wierix was known for his ability to translate complex painterly compositions into the medium of copperplate engraving. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print, which identifies the scene and provides a theological context, is a common feature of his output. The inscription reads: O Maria genuisti nobis Saluatorem, quem Ioannes videns exclamauit, dicens: Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi. This text connects the visual narrative to the biblical proclamation of John the Baptist.
The print displays the refined line work typical of Wierix, who often worked on a miniature scale. His mastery of the burin allowed for subtle gradations of light, particularly in the rendering of the figures' drapery and the soft contours of the children. This piece offers a glimpse into the devotional practices of the period, where such prints were collected and kept in personal prayer books or displayed in domestic settings. The clarity of the figures and the balanced arrangement of the composition reflect the influence of contemporary Italian art on the Northern European printmaking tradition.
