Alexandre Jacovleff produced this work following his participation in the Croisière Noire, a trans-African expedition organised by the Citroën motor company between 1924 and 1925. As the official artist for the mission, Jacovleff documented the people, customs, and environments encountered during the journey from Algeria to Madagascar. This painting captures a specific performance in Niamey, Niger, focusing on the rhythmic and physical nature of the Kuli-Kuta dance.
