Description
A moody, atmospheric pastel study by Romanian Symbolist Kimon Loghi, capturing a quiet forest lake through layered, expressive marks.
Kimon Loghi, a Romanian artist of Greek descent, produced this work using pastel on paper. The composition focuses on a central body of water framed by dense, vertical tree trunks. The artist employs a technique of layered, short strokes that suggest the texture of foliage and the shifting quality of light filtering through the canopy. The palette relies on deep greens, cool blues, and touches of violet, which create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Loghi was associated with the Symbolist movement, and his approach to nature often prioritised mood over strict topographical accuracy. In this piece, the water acts as a reflective surface, mirroring the sky and the surrounding trees. The lack of sharp edges or rigid outlines gives the scene a dreamlike quality. The trees on either side serve as a natural corridor, drawing the eye toward the centre of the composition where the light is most concentrated. The application of pastel allows for a soft, granular texture that enhances the ethereal nature of the forest setting.
This work demonstrates Loghi's interest in the interplay between light and shadow. The colours are applied with a degree of freedom, allowing individual marks to remain visible to the viewer. This method provides a sense of movement within the static forest scene. The absence of human figures reinforces the quiet, solitary atmosphere of the location. By focusing on the elemental components of the forest, Loghi invites the viewer to observe the subtle variations in tone and colour that define the environment. The work remains a representative example of his later period, where he moved away from academic precision toward a more expressive, subjective interpretation of the natural world.
