Commissioned by King Philip II for the Basilica of El Escorial, this large-scale oil painting represents a departure from the traditional iconography of martyrdom. Rather than depicting the act of execution itself, El Greco focuses on the moments preceding the death of Saint Maurice and his Theban Legion. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the earthly realm, where the soldiers deliberate their fate, and the celestial sphere, where angels descend with palms of victory to receive the souls of the faithful.

The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and fluid, expressive anatomy characteristic of the artist's mature style. The palette is dominated by cool, metallic tones in the armour, contrasted against the ethereal, swirling clouds of the upper register. The light sources are unconventional, appearing to emanate from within the figures themselves rather than a singular external point. This creates a sense of spiritual tension and psychological weight.

El Greco utilised a complex arrangement of figures to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative. In the foreground, the soldiers engage in a quiet, stoic discussion, their postures suggesting resolve. The background reveals the distant, smaller-scale scenes of the actual execution, providing a sense of depth and temporal progression. The painting was famously rejected by the King, who found the style too unconventional for the austere environment of the Escorial. Despite this initial reception, the work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to blend Byzantine influences with the dramatic sensibilities of the Italian Renaissance. The brushwork is loose and gestural, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the atmospheric heavens, which anticipates the expressive techniques of later centuries.
