Konstantinos Volanakis, often regarded as the father of Greek marine painting, captures the chaotic intensity of the 1866 Battle of Lissa in this composition. The work depicts the clash between the Austrian and Italian fleets, a conflict that marked a transition in naval warfare as ironclad ships engaged in close-quarters combat. Volanakis utilises a palette dominated by smoke, sea spray, and the dark hulls of the vessels to convey the atmosphere of the engagement.

The composition is dense with activity. In the foreground, a small boat filled with sailors struggles amidst the turbulent, dark green waters, providing a human scale to the massive scale of the naval conflict. The mid-ground and background are filled with the silhouettes of ships, their masts and rigging creating a complex web against the hazy, smoke-filled sky. The artist employs a realistic approach to the rigging and structural details of the ships, reflecting his training at the Munich Academy. The flags of the opposing fleets are visible through the thick clouds of cannon smoke, adding a sense of historical specificity to the scene.

Volanakis spent significant time in Trieste, where he observed the maritime activity that informed his work.
