Frederic Remington painted The Outlier in 1909, the final year of his life. This work represents a shift in his approach, moving away from the detailed, illustrative style of his earlier career toward a more atmospheric, painterly technique. The composition features a lone Native American rider mounted on a horse, positioned against a stark, luminous moon. The figure is rendered with a sense of isolation, set against a vast, cool-toned expanse of prairie grass.

The colour palette is dominated by shades of blue, which create a nocturnal, ethereal quality. The moon provides a singular, warm contrast, drawing the eye to the horizon. Remington uses loose, visible brushwork to suggest the texture of the grass and the soft light of the night sky. This technique reflects the influence of Impressionist methods, which he adopted during his later years to capture mood and light rather than precise anatomical detail.

Unlike his earlier, action-oriented depictions of the American West, this piece focuses on stillness and contemplation.
