Collaert, a Flemish printmaker active in Antwerp, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is divided into two primary zones, each illustrating a man discovering something of immense value. On the left, a figure gestures towards a purse, representing the treasure found in a field. On the right, a labourer with a spade interacts with an older, robed figure, symbolising the merchant who seeks fine pearls.

The background features architectural elements and a distant, rolling terrain, providing a sense of spatial depth. Collaert employs fine hatching and cross-hatching to model the figures and the textures of their garments. The musculature of the central labourer is rendered with anatomical attention, typical of the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European artists of the sixteenth century. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Defosso similis Thesauro est gloria coeli Et margaritam conquirenti pretiosam', provides the theological context for the imagery, linking the earthly pursuit of wealth to the spiritual pursuit of the kingdom of heaven.
