Arshile Gorky created The Plough and the Song during the final period of his career. This work reflects his synthesis of European Surrealist techniques and the emerging American abstract style. The composition features a warm, ochre-toned ground that provides a unified field for the floating forms. Thin, calligraphic black lines define ambiguous shapes that suggest organic growth, agricultural tools, or anatomical fragments. These lines do not enclose space in a traditional sense, but rather suggest movement across the surface. Unlike the dense, gestural works of his contemporaries, Gorky maintains a sense of openness and airiness in this piece. The paint application varies from thin, translucent washes to more opaque, defined areas.
