Ivan Bilibin was a central figure in the Russian Art Nouveau movement, particularly known for his graphic work inspired by Slavic folklore and traditional Russian woodblock printing. This illustration, created in 1901, depicts a scene from the classic fairy tale where a prince encounters a frog holding his arrow. Bilibin developed a distinct visual language characterised by bold, black ink outlines and flat, decorative colour fields. This approach draws heavily from the aesthetic of traditional Russian lubok prints, which were popular folk art engravings.

The composition is framed by a decorative border featuring floral motifs and insects, a hallmark of Bilibin's book design. The prince is dressed in historical Russian attire, his posture reflecting a moment of surprise as he discovers the frog in a birch forest. The use of line is precise and calligraphic, defining the forms of the trees and the patterns on the prince's robe without relying on complex shading or perspective. The colour palette remains muted, relying on earthy tones of green, brown, and soft blue to evoke the natural setting of the tale.

Bilibin's work for the State Printing House in St Petersburg helped define the visual identity of Russian children's literature in the early twentieth century. His ability to synthesise historical costume, folk motifs, and graphic design created a unique style that remains recognisable today. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he allowed the narrative elements to take precedence, ensuring the image functions as both a decorative piece and a clear storytelling device.
