This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1540, depicts a scene from the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The Latin inscription at the top, DISSIPAVIT SVBSTANCIAM SVAM VIVENDO LVXVRIOSE (He wasted his substance with riotous living), identifies the narrative moment. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was known for his small-scale, highly detailed prints that appealed to collectors of the period.

The composition shows three couples gathered around a circular table in an outdoor setting. The figures wear contemporary sixteenth-century German dress, reflecting the artist's tendency to update biblical narratives to suit the visual culture of his own time.
