Gerrit Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this large-scale genre painting in 1652. It depicts a travelling charlatan, or quack, standing upon a makeshift platform to sell dubious medical remedies to a gathered crowd. The scene is set outdoors, framed by a gnarled tree on the left and a stone building on the right, creating a theatrical stage for the central figure. The quack gestures with an air of authority, holding a glass flask while a monkey sits nearby, a traditional symbol of deceit and mimicry.

Dou employs a meticulous technique, characteristic of the Leiden fijnschilders (fine painters). The surface is smooth, with an attention to detail that renders textures such as the velvet of the quack's clothing, the metal of the cooking pots, and the rough bark of the tree with precision.
