Description
A dynamic watercolour by Charles M. Russell depicting cowboys in pursuit of a steer on the American plains.
Charles M. Russell, often referred to as the Cowboy Artist, produced this work during the final year of his life. The composition captures a moment of intense action on the American frontier, depicting a group of cowboys attempting to rope a steer. Russell spent his formative years working as a night wrangler in Montana, an experience that informed his technical understanding of equine anatomy and the mechanics of cattle handling.
In this watercolour, the artist employs a muted palette of ochre, tan, and dusty brown to convey the arid environment of the plains. The figures are arranged to suggest rapid movement, with the central steer caught in a dynamic turn while the riders close in. Russell avoids excessive detail in the background, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the men and the animal. His ability to render the tension in the horses' muscles and the dust kicked up by the struggle demonstrates his observational skill.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who romanticised the West through grand, sweeping vistas, Russell often focused on the specific, gritty realities of ranch life. His work provides a record of the daily tasks performed by those living on the frontier. The watercolour medium allows for a sense of immediacy, with light washes building the form of the animals and the dry, sun-baked earth. This piece remains a representative example of his late-career style, where his mastery of composition and subject matter reached a high level of clarity. The work is held in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, reflecting its status within the canon of Western American art.
