Wilhelm Kotarbinski, a Polish artist associated with the Symbolist movement, frequently explored themes of mysticism and religious narrative. In this depiction of the resurrection of Lazarus, the artist employs a dramatic chiaroscuro to focus the viewer on the moment of divine intervention. Christ stands to the left, his hand raised in a gesture of command, while the figure of Lazarus emerges from the shadows of the tomb. The composition is structured around the contrast between the light emanating from the central figure and the dark, cavernous interior of the burial site.

Kotarbinski studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and spent much of his career in Ukraine, where his work gained popularity for its atmospheric quality. His approach to this biblical subject avoids the rigid formality often found in academic religious art. Instead, he prioritises the emotional weight of the scene. The figures are rendered with a soft, painterly touch, which blurs the edges of their garments and features. This technique creates a sense of ethereal movement, as if the figures are caught between the physical world and a spiritual realm.

The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the deep red of Christ's robe. This choice of colour directs the eye across the canvas, linking the active figure of the miracle worker to the prone, awakening form of Lazarus. The surrounding onlookers are depicted with varied expressions of awe and trepidation, adding a human dimension to the supernatural event. Kotarbinski manages to capture the tension of the narrative through the positioning of the bodies and the interplay of light and shadow. This work remains a representative example of his ability to blend traditional iconography with the moody, evocative style characteristic of late nineteenth-century Symbolist painting.
