Caspar David Friedrich painted The Sea of Ice between 1823 and 1824. It depicts a shipwreck crushed by massive, jagged slabs of ice. The composition focuses on the geometric, sharp forms of the ice floes, which rise like a monument over the wreckage of the HMS Griper. The ship is barely visible, its stern protruding from the frozen mass, suggesting the overwhelming power of nature against human endeavour.

Friedrich uses a cool, restricted palette of greys, blues, and whites to convey the harshness of the Arctic environment. The light is diffuse, lacking a clear source, which adds to the sense of isolation and stillness. The ice blocks are arranged in a way that draws the eye upward toward the central peak, creating a sense of scale that dwarfs the remnants of the vessel. This work is often associated with the failed North Pole expedition of William Edward Parry, though Friedrich likely drew inspiration from his own observations of the Elbe river during winter thaws.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who sought to capture the picturesque, Friedrich presents a stark, unforgiving reality. The painting avoids human figures, placing the viewer directly before the frozen scene. The precision in the rendering of the ice, with its layered textures and sharp edges, demonstrates the artist's technical control.
