This engraving by Jacob Matham, a prominent Dutch artist of the late sixteenth century, presents an allegorical composition representing the Seven Virtues. Matham was a student and stepson of Hendrick Goltzius, and his work reflects the technical precision and stylistic tendencies of the Haarlem Mannerist school. The print features a complex arrangement of figures, each embodying a specific moral quality through traditional iconography.

Justice is identifiable by her sword and scales, while Temperance pours liquid between vessels. Prudence holds a mirror, and Fortitude is shown leaning against a column. Faith, Hope, and Charity are also integrated into the scene, surrounded by symbolic elements such as anchors and serpents. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and muscular definition characteristic of the Mannerist style, which prioritised artistic artifice and complex poses over naturalistic representation.

The composition is dense, with figures overlapping in a shallow, stage-like space. Matham employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and create a sense of volume within the figures. The background includes a distant, rocky landscape with a castle, providing a sense of scale and depth to the foreground action.
