Edmund Dulac produced this illustration for the 1909 edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The work depicts a personification of night, a figure draped in star-patterned fabric, hovering above a solitary structure. Dulac, a French-born artist who spent most of his career in Britain, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century gift book market. His approach to this commission involved a synthesis of Persian miniature aesthetics and the atmospheric techniques common to European watercolourists of the period.

The composition relies on a vertical orientation, placing the ethereal figure in the upper register while a small, domed building sits in the lower portion, partially obscured by mist. The figure's garments merge with the darkness of the sky, creating a visual link between the celestial and the terrestrial. Dulac utilised a muted palette, dominated by deep blues, greys, and soft greens, which allows the white stars on the figure's robe to provide a subtle contrast. The application of paint is delicate, showing the artist's control over the medium to suggest both the solidity of the architecture and the weightless quality of the night figure.

This illustration reflects the period's fascination with Orientalism and the romanticised interpretation of Eastern literature. Dulac's work for the Rubaiyat is often cited for its technical precision and its ability to capture the melancholic tone of the poetry.
