This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi captures a supernatural encounter from Japanese folklore. The scene depicts the vengeful spirit of the warrior Akugenta Yoshihira manifesting during a visit by Taira no Kiyomori to the Nunobiki Waterfall. Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, frequently explored themes of history, legend, and the macabre. His work often departed from the conventional aesthetics of his contemporaries, favouring dramatic compositions and psychological intensity.

The composition is dominated by the spectral figure of Yoshihira, who appears amidst dark, swirling clouds. His form is rendered with sharp, angular lines, conveying a sense of kinetic energy and aggression. Below him, the environment is stylised, with the waterfall represented by vertical blue strokes that contrast with the dark atmosphere. The inclusion of red lightning bolts adds a sense of immediate danger and supernatural power to the narrative. The print demonstrates Yoshitoshi's ability to manipulate space and shadow to create a sense of unease.
