A seminal modernist photograph by Alfred Stieglitz, capturing the geometric forms and human presence on the deck of a transatlantic steamship in 1907.

Alfred Stieglitz captured this image while travelling on the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, bound for Europe in 1907. He was standing on the first-class deck, looking down into the steerage section, where passengers were housed in the lowest, most affordable quarters of the ship. The composition is defined by the stark geometry of the ship's architecture, including the diagonal bridge, the vertical mast, and the repetitive lines of the railings. These structural elements divide the frame, creating a clear separation between the upper deck and the crowded lower level. Stieglitz noted that he was struck by the shapes and the interplay of light and shadow rather than the social narrative of the scene. He observed the straw hat of a man, the funnel, and the movement of the people below, which he felt formed a picture of shapes related to each other.
