François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, painted The Toilet of Venus in 1751. This work depicts the goddess of love in a private, domestic setting, surrounded by attendants in the form of putti. The composition focuses on the porcelain-like skin of the central figure, contrasted against the heavy, deep teal drapery that frames the scene. Boucher employs a light, pastel-heavy palette, typical of his mid-century output, to create a sense of soft, atmospheric intimacy.

The scene is constructed with careful attention to texture. The metallic sheen of the gold vessel, the soft feathers of the doves, and the lustrous quality of the pearls are rendered with precision. Venus herself is positioned in a relaxed, reclining pose, her gaze directed towards the viewer. The putti interact with her, one adjusting her hair while another presents a string of pearls, adding a sense of narrative movement to the static composition. The background suggests a garden setting, yet the focus remains firmly on the interior arrangement of the goddess and her companions.

Boucher was a favourite of Madame de Pompadour, and this painting reflects the taste for mythological subjects that defined the French court during the reign of Louis XV. The work avoids the heavy moralising tones of earlier Baroque art, opting instead for a decorative, light-hearted approach to classical themes. The arrangement of figures and objects creates a sense of balance, with the teal curtains providing a vertical anchor to the horizontal sprawl of the reclining Venus.
