Description
A masterful depiction of the biblical encounter between Christ and a Pharisee, painted by Titian in 1516.
Painted around 1516, The Tribute Money is a work by the Venetian master Titian. It depicts the biblical narrative from the Gospels where Christ is asked whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. The composition focuses on the contrast between two figures: the calm, composed Christ and the weathered, inquisitive Pharisee.
Titian employs a tight, controlled brushwork that differs from his later, looser style. The light falls across the face of Christ, drawing attention to his expression of patience and wisdom. His red tunic and dark mantle provide a visual anchor against the shadowed background. The Pharisee, positioned to the right, is rendered with a rougher texture, his skin showing the effects of age and his expression conveying a sense of worldly curiosity.
The painting was originally commissioned for the door of a cupboard in the Palazzo Ducale in Ferrara. This explains the precise, almost miniature-like quality of the execution. Titian uses the limited space to create a psychological tension between the two men. The interaction is defined by the exchange of the coin, which sits at the centre of the composition.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's early mastery of oil paint. The way light interacts with the fabric of the garments and the skin tones shows a sophisticated understanding of colour and form. The dark, neutral background removes any distraction, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the figures. It is a study in human character, contrasting the divine with the mundane. The painting remains a primary example of Venetian Renaissance portraiture, showing how Titian could convey complex theological themes through simple, human gestures.
