Description
A Renaissance masterpiece by Luca Signorelli, depicting the Virgin and Child with the Trinity and two bishops in a balanced, theological composition.
This work by Luca Signorelli depicts a complex theological arrangement within a lunette-topped composition. At the centre, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child, flanked by two archangels. The figure on the left, often identified as Michael, holds a pair of scales, while the figure on the right holds a lily, a traditional symbol of the Annunciation. Above this central group, the Holy Trinity is represented with God the Father supporting the crucified Christ, surrounded by cherubim.
In the foreground, two bishops are seated, engaged in the study of theological texts. Their heavy, ornate vestments are rendered with attention to texture and pattern, contrasting with the more fluid drapery of the celestial figures. The inclusion of the inscription 'AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA' on a scroll held by the angel provides a narrative link to the Annunciation. Signorelli employs a balanced, symmetrical structure that guides the viewer from the earthly scholars at the base to the divine hierarchy above.
The painting demonstrates the artist's interest in anatomical precision and the sculptural quality of the human form, traits that were characteristic of his work in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The background features a landscape that recedes into the distance, providing a sense of depth that anchors the heavenly scene in a recognisable, if idealised, environment. The use of light and shadow helps to define the volume of the figures, creating a sense of physical presence that was highly regarded during the Italian Renaissance. This piece reflects the period's focus on combining classical humanism with traditional Christian iconography, resulting in a composition that is both ordered and narratively dense.
