Description
A masterpiece of the High Renaissance, this work features the Virgin Mary, the infant Christ, John the Baptist, and an angel in a rocky grotto.
The Virgin of the Rocks, commissioned for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan, displays the technical mastery of Leonardo da Vinci. The composition arranges the Virgin Mary, the infant Christ, the infant John the Baptist, and an angel within a cavernous, rocky setting. Leonardo employs sfumato, a technique involving the subtle blending of colours and tones, to create soft transitions between light and shadow. This approach gives the figures a three-dimensional quality, allowing them to emerge from the darkness of the grotto.
The figures form a pyramidal structure, a common device in Renaissance art to provide balance and stability to the scene. The Virgin Mary sits at the apex, her hand extended over the infant Christ, while the angel gestures toward the infant John the Baptist. The geological formations in the background demonstrate Leonardo's interest in natural history and the physical world. The precision of the botanical details in the foreground contrasts with the atmospheric, hazy distance, showing his observation of light and perspective.
This work is one of two versions painted by the artist. The version held at the National Gallery in London is widely attributed to Leonardo, though it was subject to a lengthy legal dispute regarding its completion and payment. The painting reflects the shift in Italian art toward a more naturalistic representation of human emotion and physical form. The interaction between the figures is quiet and contemplative, moving away from the rigid, formal poses found in earlier religious works. The use of oil paint allowed for the depth of colour and the delicate rendering of skin tones that define this period of his career.
