A detailed reproduction of a seventeenth-century Russian icon, featuring the Virgin of Vladimir surrounded by twelve narrative scenes of her miracles.
This work depicts the Virgin of Vladimir, a central image in Eastern Orthodox tradition, surrounded by twelve smaller panels illustrating the miracles attributed to the icon. The central figure follows the Eleusa type, where the Virgin and Child press their cheeks together in a gesture of maternal affection. The surrounding scenes provide a narrative cycle, documenting the historical and spiritual significance of the original icon within Russian religious life. The composition adheres to traditional iconographic conventions. The central panel is larger, drawing the viewer to the primary figures, while the surrounding scenes are arranged in a grid. The use of gold leaf provides a luminous background, intended to represent the divine light of the spiritual realm rather than a physical space. The figures are rendered with stylised features, focusing on symbolic expression rather than anatomical realism. Russian icon painting of this period often utilised egg tempera on prepared wooden panels. The application of paint is precise, with fine brushwork used to define the facial features and the folds of the garments. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the techniques employed by anonymous masters who worked within the strict guidelines of the church. This print captures the texture of the original panel, including the aged surface and the characteristic warmth of the aged pigments. It is a representative example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical use, maintaining the aesthetic standards of the seventeenth-century Russian school.
