Description
A 1520 engraving by Sebald Beham depicting the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child, showcasing the technical precision of the German Little Masters.
The Virgin with the Pear is a notable engraving by the German artist Sebald Beham, dated 1520. Beham was one of the Kleinmeister, or Little Masters, a group of printmakers who produced small, highly detailed works that were widely circulated across Europe. This piece demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period, utilising fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture.
The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated beneath a tree, nursing the Christ Child. She holds a pear in her left hand, a fruit often associated with the sweetness of virtue or the salvation brought by Christ. The figures are rendered with a sense of volume, their garments falling in heavy, structured folds that occupy the foreground. The background is minimal, focusing the viewer on the interaction between mother and child.
Beham's approach to the human figure reflects the influence of Albrecht Dürer, whose work set the standard for German printmaking in the early sixteenth century. The artist's monogram, HSP, is visible on a small tablet in the lower right corner, a common practice for printmakers of the era to assert authorship. The engraving displays a balance between the naturalistic treatment of the figures and the stylised, decorative quality of the drapery. This work provides a clear example of the shift towards smaller, portable devotional images that allowed collectors to engage with religious themes in a domestic setting. The clarity of the line work and the controlled use of shadow create a sense of depth within a compact format, demonstrating the skill required to execute such detail on a copper plate.
