Description
A fine engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the virtue of Chastity, represented by a woman with a swan and lily.
This engraving by Cornelis Cort, titled Castitas, forms part of a series depicting the virtues. Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his later years in Italy, was instrumental in translating the complex compositions of Italian masters into the medium of print. His technical precision allowed for the reproduction of subtle tonal shifts and anatomical detail, which were highly valued by his contemporaries.
The figure of Castitas is depicted as a woman seated in a natural setting, accompanied by a swan. In the iconographic tradition of the period, the swan serves as a symbol of purity and grace. She holds a lily, a traditional attribute associated with chastity and innocence. The composition reflects the influence of Mannerist aesthetics, visible in the elongated proportions of the figure and the fluid, rhythmic folds of the drapery. The surrounding trees and rocky outcrop provide a structured environment that frames the central subject.
Cort utilised a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and volume. The lines follow the contours of the body and the fabric, creating a sense of three-dimensional presence. The Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising context, typical of allegorical works produced during the sixteenth century. This print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship that defined Cort's career, particularly his ability to render texture and light through the disciplined use of the burin. The work is a clear example of the cross-pollination between Northern European printmaking traditions and the stylistic developments occurring in Italy during the late Renaissance.
