This engraving by Cornelis Cort, a Dutch master active in the sixteenth century, depicts the personification of Memoria (Memory). The work belongs to a series exploring the virtues, a common subject in Renaissance iconography. Cort, who spent his later years in Italy, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of works by Titian and others into the medium of copperplate engraving.

The composition features a seated female figure, draped in classical robes, who is captured in the act of writing. Her posture is contemplative, with her gaze directed toward the tablet in her hands. Beside her stands a dog, a traditional symbol of fidelity and watchfulness, which serves to ground the allegorical figure in a tangible, earthly reality.
