This work is a detail from the dome of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma. Correggio executed this fresco cycle between 1520 and 1524, demonstrating his mastery of illusionistic space and human anatomy. The scene depicts the Evangelist surrounded by figures in a celestial setting, characterised by the soft, atmospheric light that defines the artist's mature style.

Correggio employs a technique known as di sotto in su, which creates the impression that the figures are floating above the viewer. The composition is organised around the circular architecture of the dome, with the figures arranged in a rhythmic, spiralling motion. The musculature of the central figures is rendered with a sense of weight and volume, while the surrounding clouds are painted with a lighter, more ethereal touch. The palette consists of warm, earthy tones, punctuated by the golden light emanating from the centre of the dome.

This fresco represents a departure from the more rigid, linear compositions of the earlier Renaissance. Instead, Correggio focuses on the interaction between light and shadow to model form, a method that would later influence the development of Baroque painting. The figures are not merely static icons but are depicted in dynamic, naturalistic poses that suggest movement and emotional engagement. The integration of the figures into the architectural space of the church demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of perspective and spatial illusion. By blurring the boundaries between the painted surface and the physical environment, Correggio invites the viewer to participate in the spiritual experience of the vision.
