Painted in 1911, 'The Yellow Cow' by Franz Marc is an iconic example of German Expressionism. The artwork features a leaping cow in shades of yellow, set against an abstract background of red, green, and black.
Franz Marc, a leading figure of German Expressionism, painted 'The Yellow Cow' in 1911. Marc sought to express spiritual meaning through his art, often using animals as symbols of purity and connection to nature. He was a founder member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an Expressionist group that prioritised spiritual expression over realistic representation. The group aimed to explore the emotional and psychological potential of colour and form. Marc's work is characterised by its bold use of colour and simplified forms, reflecting his belief in the power of art to convey inner truths. He died in action during World War I. 'The Yellow Cow' depicts a leaping cow rendered in shades of yellow, set against a background of red, green, and black. The animal's form is simplified and stylised, with flowing lines and exaggerated proportions. The colours are non-naturalistic, chosen to evoke emotion and convey a sense of energy and vitality. The background is composed of abstract shapes and forms, suggesting a dreamlike or visionary space. The painting reflects Marc's interest in conveying the inner essence of animals and his belief in the spiritual power of colour.
