Description

A refined chiaroscuro print depicting the classical narrative of Timocleus before Alexander, based on a design by Perino del Vaga.

This print, titled Timocleus Justified by Alexander, is a fine example of the eighteenth-century interest in reproducing master drawings through the medium of the chiaroscuro woodcut. The work is based on a design by Perino del Vaga, a prominent Italian Renaissance artist, which was held in the collection of Pierre Crozat. The comte de Caylus, a French aristocrat and antiquarian, was instrumental in the production of the Recueil Crozat, a multi-volume publication that documented the drawings of the old masters.

The composition depicts the classical narrative of Timocleus, who is brought before Alexander the Great. The scene is arranged within an oval frame, a common format for such reproductive prints. Alexander sits upon a dais, his posture conveying authority, while he addresses the figures gathered before him. The line work is precise, reflecting the technical requirements of translating a pen and wash drawing into a printed format. The use of a single colour tone, typical of the chiaroscuro technique, provides volume to the figures and depth to the architectural setting without the need for a full palette.

Caylus was a significant figure in the French Enlightenment, known for his archaeological pursuits and his efforts to preserve the history of art. His collaboration with engravers such as Nicolas Le Sueur allowed for the dissemination of works that would otherwise remain hidden in private cabinets. This print captures the aesthetic values of the period, where the study of classical antiquity and the mastery of Renaissance draughtsmanship were held in high regard. The clarity of the composition and the focus on human gesture demonstrate the narrative focus prevalent in historical art of the era. This piece offers a glimpse into the scholarly practices of the eighteenth-century art world, where the act of reproduction was a form of intellectual engagement with the past.
