Description

A 1776 title page by Abraham Delfos, featuring elegant typography and classical figures to commemorate a ceremonial sleigh procession in Leiden.

This title page, created by the Dutch engraver Abraham Delfos in 1776, documents a specific civic celebration in Leiden. The text announces the 'Plegtige Sledevaert', a ceremonial sleigh procession organised by the local theatre society under the motto 'Veniam Pro Laude'. Such events were common in the eighteenth-century Netherlands, serving as public displays of civic pride and cultural engagement.

The composition follows the conventions of period typography and illustration. The central text is arranged with formal balance, using a mix of serif and italicised scripts to distinguish between the event title and the descriptive details. Below the text, Delfos includes a decorative frame containing a smaller vignette of a putto amidst clouds, flanked by two larger winged figures holding flaming torches. These figures, rendered with delicate watercolour washes, provide a sense of movement and classical allegory to the otherwise rigid structure of the printed announcement.

Delfos was a prolific engraver based in Leiden, known for his ability to capture the details of local life and historical records. His work often bridged the gap between functional printing and artistic expression. The use of colour here is restrained, applied to the lettering and the decorative elements to guide the viewer's eye across the page. The paper remains clean, typical of high-quality eighteenth-century print production, allowing the fine lines of the etching to remain clear. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Enlightenment, where even ephemeral event announcements were treated with a high degree of graphic care and artistic consideration.
