Two Egrets and Lotus - Sakai Hōitsu

A refined ink and colour study of two egrets by the Edo period master Sakai Hōitsu, capturing the quiet elegance of the Rinpa school.

Sakai Hōitsu, a prominent figure of the Edo period, produced this work within the Rinpa tradition. The composition features two egrets positioned near a lotus leaf, rendered with the characteristic restraint of the school. Hōitsu, who was a member of the Himeji domain's ruling family, became a monk later in life, a transition that often informed the contemplative nature of his subjects. His approach to the kacho-ga genre, or bird-and-flower painting, relies on a balance between decorative artifice and natural observation.

The egrets are depicted with subtle ink washes, their forms defined by the negative space of the silk background. The lotus leaf, shown in a state of decay, provides a contrast to the pristine white plumage of the birds. This choice of subject matter reflects the seasonal awareness common in Japanese aesthetics, where the transition of time is observed through the life cycles of flora and fauna.
