Description
A nineteenth-century album page featuring eight formal carte-de-visite portraits of the Matthes, Doorman, and Van Thiel families.
This archival document presents a page from a nineteenth-century family album, containing eight individual carte-de-visite portraits. These small-format photographs were a popular medium during the mid-to-late Victorian era, allowing families to collect and display images of relatives and acquaintances within decorative, gold-embossed albums. The subjects are posed in formal attire, reflecting the social conventions and sartorial standards of the Dutch bourgeoisie during this period.
The arrangement follows a rigid grid, typical of the mass-produced albums of the time. Each portrait is housed within an oval aperture, framed by thin gold lines that provide a sense of order and uniformity. The sitters, identified as members of the Matthes, Doorman, and Van Thiel families, are captured in static, studio-based poses. The lighting is soft and directional, characteristic of the glass-roofed studios used by professional photographers of the era to illuminate their subjects without harsh shadows.
Technically, these are albumen prints, a process that utilised egg whites to bind the photographic chemicals to the paper surface. This method produced a characteristic sepia or warm brown tone, which has aged over time. The album page itself, with its dark, heavy cardstock and decorative corner motifs, serves as a physical record of nineteenth-century domestic life. It offers a glimpse into the private sphere, where the act of collecting portraits functioned as a method of maintaining family identity and social standing. The collection provides a factual record of individual appearances, clothing styles, and the aesthetic presentation of personal history before the advent of more accessible, amateur photography.
