Ushiwakamaru Visiting Minazuruhime - Torii Kiyonaga

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting the legendary Ushiwakamaru playing a flute during a nocturnal visit.

Torii Kiyonaga, a central figure of the Ukiyo-e school, produced this woodblock print during the height of his career in the late eighteenth century. The composition depicts a scene from the legend of Ushiwakamaru, the childhood name of the warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The narrative focuses on a nocturnal encounter, where the young warrior plays a flute while visiting Minazuruhime.

Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures, a stylistic departure from the more compact proportions favoured by his predecessors. In this work, the figures occupy the foreground with a sense of poise and physical presence. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, placing the three individuals within a structured architectural setting that overlooks a rolling, verdant landscape. The use of a lantern held by the woman in the black kimono provides a soft illumination, drawing the viewer's eye across the scene.

The background features a gentle slope, bamboo stalks, and a winding path, elements that provide context without overwhelming the primary subjects. Kiyonaga utilises a refined colour palette, relying on muted greens, soft oranges, and deep blacks to create a sense of calm.
