Swanevelt, often referred to as 'Herman d'Italie' due to his long residence in Rome, was a master of the classical style. His approach to printmaking involved a careful balance between the foreground details and the receding vistas of mountains and trees. The etching technique allows for a fine graduation of tone, particularly in the rendering of the clouds and the textured bark of the large, dominant tree on the left.
