Description

A detailed historical etching by Joannes Bemme depicting the departure of Anglo-Russian troops from Den Helder in 1799.

This etching by Joannes Bemme documents the departure of Anglo-Russian forces from Den Helder in 1799, a moment during the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland. The composition provides a wide, panoramic view of the coastal scene, capturing the logistical activity of troops preparing to board ships. Bemme employs a precise, linear style typical of late eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, focusing on the clarity of the figures and the structural details of the nearby buildings.

The foreground is populated with soldiers in various states of readiness, their uniforms and equipment rendered with careful attention to detail. To the left, the harbour is filled with sailing vessels, their masts and rigging creating a rhythmic verticality against the open sky. To the right, a low-slung building with smoking chimneys provides a domestic anchor to the military scene, suggesting the proximity of the encampment to local infrastructure. The artist balances the chaotic nature of a military withdrawal with a structured, observational approach, ensuring that the viewer can distinguish individual groups of soldiers and sailors.

Bemme, a Dutch engraver, often collaborated with other artists of the period, including Dirk Langendijk, whose influence is visible in the dynamic arrangement of the figures. The etching serves as a visual record of the conflict, prioritising topographical and historical accuracy over dramatic flair. The use of light and shadow is restrained, relying on fine cross-hatching to define the textures of the sandy terrain and the wooden hulls of the ships. This work offers a window into the military history of the Netherlands at the turn of the nineteenth century, capturing the scale and atmosphere of a significant maritime operation.
