Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born painter who arrived in Australia during the gold rush, produced this work in 1853. The painting depicts the Victorian countryside with a focus on the specific topography between Ballarat and Creswick Creek. Von Guerard was trained in the European tradition of the Düsseldorf School, which prioritised precise observation and a meticulous approach to natural detail. This background is evident in the careful rendering of the eucalyptus trees, the rocky outcrops, and the play of light across the creek.

The composition employs a classic framing technique, using the overhanging branches and the foreground bank to draw the eye toward the distant Pyrenees and the expanse of Lake Burrambeet.
