Description
A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer, capturing a panoramic view of Lucerne, its river, and the surrounding Swiss mountains.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures a panoramic perspective of Lucerne, Switzerland, during the late nineteenth century. Sommer, a German photographer who established a successful studio in Naples, travelled extensively across Europe to document urban centres and natural sites for the growing tourism market. His work is noted for its technical precision and ability to render architectural detail alongside atmospheric conditions.
The composition provides a high-angle view, looking down upon the dense urban fabric of the city. The Reuss River flows through the centre, flanked by traditional Swiss architecture, while the iconic Chapel Bridge is visible towards the right. In the distance, the expanse of Lake Lucerne stretches toward the horizon, framed by the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. The image reflects the era's fascination with the Grand Tour, providing travellers with a permanent record of their journey through the Alps.
Sommer utilised the albumen process, which was the standard for commercial photography during this period. This method involved coating paper with egg white and silver salts, resulting in a smooth surface that allowed for the fine detail seen in the rooftops and distant peaks. The sepia tones are characteristic of the chemical ageing of these prints. The photograph serves as a historical document of Swiss urban development before the rapid modernisation of the twentieth century. It remains a clear example of the topographical documentation that defined the output of nineteenth-century commercial photography studios.
