Sommer, a German photographer who established a successful studio in Naples, documented the archaeological excavations of the region with technical precision. His work provided nineteenth-century audiences with a direct visual connection to the site, which was then a subject of intense European fascination.
In the foreground, the composition features a plaster cast of a human victim. These casts were created by pouring plaster into the voids left by decomposed bodies within the volcanic ash, a technique pioneered by Giuseppe Fiorelli. The inclusion of the cast brings a visceral, human element to the archaeological site. Behind this, the ruins of the city stretch towards the horizon, where the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius looms.
