Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving demonstrates his technical precision during the late fifteenth century. The composition features the Virgin Mary standing in a gentle contrapposto, cradling the Christ Child. Her long, flowing hair cascades over her shoulders, while her heavy robes are rendered with dense, systematic hatching to suggest volume and weight. The Christ Child holds an apple, a traditional symbol referencing the fall of man and the subsequent redemption through his sacrifice.

Schongauer utilised cross-hatching to create subtle gradations of shadow, particularly within the folds of the drapery. This method allowed him to achieve a sculptural quality that was highly influential for his contemporaries and successors, including Albrecht Dürer. The figures are set against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between mother and child. The Virgin's expression is serene, reflecting the devotional nature of the work, which was intended for private contemplation rather than public display.

As a practitioner of the Northern Renaissance, Schongauer moved away from the flatter, more linear styles of the earlier Gothic period. His ability to render texture, from the softness of the child's skin to the crispness of the fabric, displays a keen observation of the physical world. The artist's monogram, M+S, is visible at the base of the print, a mark of his professional identity as a goldsmith and engraver. This print remains a primary example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved in early German printmaking, where the medium of engraving allowed for the wide dissemination of religious imagery across Europe.
