Description
A refined stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi, depicting the Virgin Mary with the sleeping Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist.
This stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi reproduces a painting by Annibale Carracci, which was held in the British Royal Collection. Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in London, became a master of the stipple technique. This method uses small dots to create tonal gradations, allowing for a soft, painterly effect that mimics the texture of skin and fabric more effectively than traditional line engraving.
The composition depicts the Virgin Mary gesturing for silence, her finger raised to her lips, as she watches over the sleeping Christ Child. To the left, the young Saint John the Baptist reaches towards the infant, his expression one of quiet reverence. The scene is intimate and domestic, focusing on the human interaction between the figures rather than grand theological symbolism. The drapery folds are rendered with precision, showing the influence of Carracci’s original composition, while Bartolozzi’s delicate dot work provides a gentle luminosity to the figures.
Bartolozzi was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and served as Engraver to the King. His work was instrumental in popularising the stipple technique in Britain, making high-quality reproductions of Old Master paintings accessible to a wider audience. This print captures the technical skill required to translate the depth and shadow of a Baroque oil painting into the monochromatic medium of printmaking. The inscription at the base confirms its provenance from the Royal Collection, reflecting the high regard in which Bartolozzi’s work was held by his contemporaries. The print remains a fine example of eighteenth-century reproductive engraving, demonstrating the balance between technical discipline and the soft, atmospheric qualities of the original subject matter.
