Pierre-Paul Prud'hon was a French painter and draughtsman known for his distinct approach to chiaroscuro, often referred to as the French Correggio. This work, Virtue Attacked by Vice, demonstrates his mastery of the medium, utilising black and white chalk on blue paper to create a soft, atmospheric quality. The composition focuses on the psychological tension between the two figures. The personification of Virtue is depicted with closed eyes and a serene, resigned expression, while the figure of Vice is rendered with coarser, more aggressive features, pressing close to her.

Prud'hon avoids the rigid lines common in the Neoclassical works of his contemporaries, such as Jacques-Louis David. Instead, he employs a sfumato technique, where the transitions between light and shadow are blurred to create a sense of volume and emotional depth. The blue paper acts as a mid-tone, allowing the artist to build form through the application of white chalk for highlights and black chalk for deep shadows. This method gives the figures a sculptural presence while maintaining a dreamlike, ethereal quality.

The allegorical subject matter reflects the moralising themes popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Prud'hon often explored the conflict between innocence and corruption, using classical motifs to examine human nature.
