A refined woodblock print of a moorhen by Matsuki Heikichi, capturing the bird in a moment of quiet stillness with subtle ink tones.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi depicts a moorhen, or waterhoen, standing in shallow water. The composition follows the traditional kacho-ga format, which focuses on birds and flowers. The bird is rendered with soft, graduated ink tones, creating a sense of volume in its plumage. Its posture, balanced on one leg, suggests a moment of stillness in a natural environment. The background remains minimal, using negative space to suggest a quiet pond or marshland. A few reeds are positioned to the right, providing a vertical counterpoint to the rounded form of the bird. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greys, blacks, and pale greens to maintain a sense of calm.
Matsuki Heikichi was a prominent publisher and artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement. This movement sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques, such as atmospheric perspective and realistic shading, while maintaining the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in the woodblock process, particularly in the subtle blending of ink on the paper. The artist uses the natural texture of the paper to enhance the overall composition, allowing the grain to interact with the printed ink. This work reflects the period's interest in observing nature with a quiet, contemplative eye. It avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring a direct and honest representation of the subject. The red seal on the right side indicates the publisher or artist mark, a common feature in prints of this era. This piece is suitable for those interested in the intersection of traditional Japanese aesthetics and early twentieth-century printmaking techniques.
